This week my friend Mark has loaned me his old Nikon dSLR. Although it’s mind-bogglingly complicated to work, it really does give a lot more control over the image that you end up with. That said, you clearly need to be mind-bogglingly more in control…

This is the war memorial in the centre of Coventry’s Memorial Park. It’s an imposing stone tower which seemingly exists for no other reason than to point at the sky.

However, surrounding it are trees. Each tree has been planted in honour of a serviceman killed fighting on behalf of our country so that we can live in the freedom that we currently enjoy.

There are trees that have clearly been there for many years, with faded metal plates showing the names of men who died in the First World War, right up to men who have died in the conflict in Afghanistan.

With the sound of children playing and ice cream van chimes in the background, it’s a sobering place to stand and remember.
