If you have a Mac, and you tend to spend time with the same tabs open in your web browser, then have a look at Fluid.

It’s a similar idea to Adobe Air except with Fluid you create your own apps using web URLs. As an example I’ve created one with Google Reader.

Your App can be added to your dock, run separately from your web browser and can even have a badge showing the number of unread items. And it even works on pre-Intel Macs, but you must have OS10.5 or later.

Find Fluid online here.

The Days That Count Desk Top Calendar (Moleskine Srl) (Moleskine Legendary Notebooks (Calendars))

Found this very cool desk calendar on Amazon. I really like Moleskine notebooks so am hoping the calendar is just as nice!

I caught myself out this Christmas. MrsG-T and I were having a discussion about being able to watch the contents of our Humax DVR on the LCD TV in our bedroom instead of being restricted to the lounge. I went online and discovered that there is indeed a device that will allow this very function, but I then realised that I didn’t want it!

Over the last year I’ve found that I’m a lot less anxious to buy new equipment and it’s not just because our normal three-bedroom terraced house is surprisingly full.

I think it’s partly because I have pieces of equipment that I either don’t use, or don’t use to anything like their capacity. My iPhone 3G is probably the one thing that I really use to something approaching it’s functional abilities!

So, my decision, my new year resolution if you will, is to use the stuff I have in a more efficient way. and to get rid of things that I can’t or won’t use. I need to include the whole house including the loft and the garage.

I have too many computers, too many audio systems, too many printers, too many books and too many magazines. And that’s just the stuff that I know I have!

The plan is to rationalise, to work out what I want to achieve in our home, and then configure the equipment that I have to make it happen. The rest of the stuff will be disappearing, hopefully not into landfill but somewhere where someone else can make use of it.

If you know that you can use some of my stuff for a useful purpose, please contact me here. Write and let me know what you would use the thing(s) for, how much you can afford to pay and I’ll send the goods to you. Any proceeds are going to Andy’s Angels, so please try to at least cover the cost of mailing.

To kick things off I have a blue and white Mac G3 tower with a built-in ZIP drive, and an HP Laserjet 4L printer with some spare cartridges. I’ll work out a better way of posting items up for grabs in the near future!

I’d also like to share with the readers of this blog where the stuff went and how it’s being used now, if that’s OK with the recipients.

It’ll be interesting to see where all my excess stuff ends up and what it ends up doing.

image382273013.jpgIn 2008 the population of the United Kingdom was estimated at a little over 61 million.

Of these, around twenty percent are children under the age of 16, leaving an adult figure of just under 49 million.

RoSPA published the news that 1,000 visits to Accident and Emergency are caused by Christmas trees annually (story was released in 2003).

That means that 0.002% of adults manage to injure themselves with a tree.

Sounds pretty low-risk to me…

Today is MiniG-T’s 8th birthday, and it’s somewhat hard to believe that such a long time has passed since we were waiting, MrsG-T and I, to be taken into the operating theatre and meet him for the first time.

He was born to the gentle sounds of Diana Krall and I think much of that gentleness has stayed with him as he has developed into a big-hearted boy. He loves animals of all varieties and at this stage would like to be a vet when he grows up.

Art and literature (well, Horrid Henry books…) are a passion and he’s recently started learning to play guitar. This year, for the first time, he took part in a county Cross-Country race and came 3rd in his school against boys two years older than him, and he was far from last despite being the smallest in stature.

I’m fabulously proud of my MiniG-T. His big brown eyes, loving smile and caring heart make me smile inside, and more than probably anything else in the world he has taught me about God’s love. When he was born, and as he’s grown, I’ve begun to understand how God can love me deeply whilst not particularly enjoying a course of action that I’ve chosen to take.

Thanks for making me such a proud dad, my son! I love you…

This was emailed to me this week and I thought it very thought-provoking. Apparently it is the philosophy of Charles Schulz, the creator of the ‘Peanuts’ comic strip and it reads like this:

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.

2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.

3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America pageant.

4 Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.

5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.

6. Name the last decade’s worth of World Series winners.

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday.

These are no second-rate achievers.

They are the best in their fields.

But the applause dies..

Awards tarnish.

Achievements are forgotten.

Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here’s another quiz. See how you do on this one:

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.

2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.

3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.

4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special!!

5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

Easier? The lesson:

The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money or the most awards.

They simply are the ones who care the most

My friend Andy slipped away from us all on Saturday 21st November, in his own house surrounded by family just as he wanted.

I’ll miss him.

Andy, thanks for the great adventure, and for the amazing people that you brought into my life.

Sara has been updating Andy’s blog with details about celebrating his life together. Have a look by clicking here.

If you have had the misfortune to download the Intego Anti-virus software for Mac on your machine, you may well have decided that you want to get rid of it and that’s not as easy as you think.

I used AppZapper to try and uninstall but it wasn’t that successful (for the first time ever I might add…) but this did the job:

At last my Mac has reverted back to its pre-Intego speed. Whew!
